Current update of Killaloe Bypass/Shannon Bridge Crossing/R494 Upgrade

Current Update March 2024

Work is progressing well across the Project despite the recent inclement weather. There is a substantial amount of construction activity currently underway across all areas of the site and a number of critical Project Milestones have been achieved since Christmas. Most notably:- Structural Steel to spans 1 & 2 have been installed, staggered junctions at Creeveroe Road and Hill Road have opened, Kilmastulla Bridge opened to traffic, Railway Bridge kentledge slabs and edge beams poured. Upcoming Milestones include the mobilisation and assembly of 600t crane and installation of the remaining Bridge arch girders in April. The railway bridge section opening on the R494 is on programme for Friday 3rd of May. The R494 will be open to through traffic after this date however there will be Traffic Management arrangements in place whilst the remainder of the works both online and offline are completed towards the new Roolagh roundabout.

Instream Section

Central Pier: Concrete works complete. Awaiting delivery of structural steels to spans either side. Span 4: Edge girders installation week commencing 2nd April.

Span 3: Edge girders installation week commencing 8th April.

Clare Side (West Embankment)

Span 1: Structural Steel installed. Temporary works and permanent falsework in progress.

Span 2: Structural Steel installed. Temporary works and permanent falsework in progress.

Tipperary Side (East Embankment)

Span 5: Structural Steel installed. Temporary works and permanent falsework in progress.

Span 6: Structural Steel installed. Temporary works and permanent falsework in progress.

R494

Section 1: Accom. Wks. to properties around Roolagh Junction have commenced and are progressing well. Works to Pump Station are in progress.

Sections 2: Southbound lane opened to traffic. Accommodation works continue.

Section 2: Northbound lane road construction activities in progress. Accommodation works commenced.

Section 3: Attenuation tank installation in progress.

Section 5: Accommodation works in progress.

Section 6: Southbound lane opened to traffic.

Section 6: Road construction activities in progress.

Section 7: Kilmastulla north embankment and bridge open to traffic. Accommodation works in progress. Shannonside embankment paved and parapets installed. Railway Bridge south embankment road preps in progress and culvert installation due to commence. L94942 access ramp and junction with Kilmastulla Bridge well advanced.

CIE/IE Railway Bridge

Kentledge slab and edge beams poured.

Kilmastulla Bridge

Parapets installed. Deck paved to binder course. Bridge open to traffic.

Shannonside Business Park

Parapets to retaining wall installed. Access ramp to estate paved. Embankment paved.

Killaloe Bypass & Shannon Bridge Link

Shantraud to Clarisford: Paving and road preps in progress. Embankment to West Abutment constructed.

Shantraud Roundabout to Creeveroe Road: Roundabout paved. Bypass paved to binder course. Finishes to pedestrian path in progress.

Creeveroe Road to Hill Road: Paving to binder course complete. Finishes to pedestrian path in progress.

Hill Road to Kincora Roundabout: First 200mm being prepped for kerbs. Pavement laying in progress over remainder.

Kincora: Road tie-ins commenced.

Note:

  • The Site will be closed from Thursday 28th March until Tuesday 2nd April 2024.
  • The R494 is scheduled to be re-opened to through-traffic on May 3rd 2024. Please note that temporary traffic management arrangements will continue until completion of Upgrade.
  • All vessel operators are requested to pay attention to navigational buoys in the vicinity (upstream & downstream) of the works zone and to give a wide berth to marine plant associated with the works. We further request that all vessels proceed with extreme caution if in the vicinity of the works zone.
