Cllr. Begley thanked his fellow Councillors and the staff of the Shannon MD for their help and support in fulfilling his role over the last 12 months.  He reflected on the projects that were completed and progressed during his tenure as Cathaoirleach of the Shannon MD including the Springfield Flood Defence Scheme, which is expected to be completed in August of this year, the Town & Village Renewal Schemes for Clonlara, Drumgeely and Bunratty that are progressing.  Cllr. On a County wide level, Cllr. Begley referenced the takeover of the tourism assets in the County from Shannon Airport Group and the signing of contracts for a survey and assessment of all the sites.  The new route from Shannon to Paris which is due to commence in September is perfectly timed with the commencement of the Rugby World Cup and Irelands participation in same, is expected to generate a significant volume of passengers through Shannon Airport.

Nominations for Cathaoirleach were invited.  On the proposal of Cllr. PJ Ryan, seconded by Cllr. Gerard Flynn, Cllr Donna McGettigan was unanimously elected as Cathaoirleach.  Cllr. Donna McGettigan then took the chair for the remainder of the meeting, having been handed the chain of office by Cllr. Michael Begley.
