Unauthorised developments

Unauthorised development is where development is carried out without having received the appropriate permission or development not being carried out in compliance with the permission issued.

Under Part VIII of the Planning and Development Act 2000, as amended, complaints of planning infringements including unauthorised developments must be investigated within defined timeframes. A common procedure applies for planning offences – issue of a Warning Letter, service of an Enforcement Notice and institution of legal Proceedings.

Please review the below sections in the order as presented. This will inform and guide you before reporting an unauthorised development.

Exempt development

Exempt development is development for which planning permission is not required. Find out and view guides about exempted development.
