Council marks Guinness World Record achievement

15 November 2018

The Mayor of Ennis Municipal District (MD), Councillor Clare Colleran Molloy, and Elected Members of Ennis MD yesterday recognised the local 'Knitters of the World' group and Clare Branch of the Irish Red Cross in securing an official Guinness World Record for the “Largest Hand Knitted Blanket” (non-crochet).

The 21,471-ft2 blanket was produced by Valery Larkin and 'Knitters of the World' in Ennis, with the support of Irish Red Cross, and verified on 26 August 2018 by Guinness World Records.  To mark the achievement a section of the blanket, featuring a poem on the theme of 'community' by Ciaran Collins from Darragh, was unveiled at Áras Contae an Chláir in Ennis.

The Knitted Poem was an initiative of the Clare Volunteer Centre to celebrate Clare’s tightly knit communities, and was unveiled at a ceremony in Glór in 2012. The individual 5” squares were knitted by people from across the world who had Clare connections. The poem was profiled in a special programme aired by Nationwide in 2012 to coincide with the launch and was the result of a project involving over 100 volunteers and 40 groups. The poem was gifted to Valery Larkin and 'Knitters of the World' as part of the Record Breaking Attempt.

Meanwhile, sections of the blanket are available for purchase through Irish Red Cross with all proceeds going directly to the voluntary organisation. See www.clareredcross.ie.
