Clare Museum will host a special Heritage Week lecture on newly discovered Civil War graffiti on Mountrivers Bridge, near Doonbeg.

Heritage Consultant Bryn Coldrick of Kilrush-based Archaeological Management Solutions will present the talk on the graffiti which was discovered as part of recent architectural recording prior to the demolition of the bridge.  The term ‘Free Stater’ and other marks were recorded, and following consultation with the National Museum of Ireland the object is now part of the Clare Museum collection.

The event, organised in co-operation with Transport infrastructure Ireland (TII) which funded the work, will address the possible provenance of the graffiti, its significance to the local community, and its historical context in relation to the War of Independence and Civil War in West Clare.

The talk will take place at 7.30 pm on Wednesday 21st August.  It is part of the museum’s Heritage Week activities and is the latest in a series of monthly lectures on topics of local and national cultural interest.

Admission is free, but due to limited space, attendees need to book in advance to avoid disappointment at claremuseum@clarecoco.ie. See clarecoco.ie or heritageweek.ie for a full listing of Heritage Week events taking place in Clare.
