Dog control

Clare County Council monitors the dog control service in the county, which is implemented in conjunction with the Midland Animal Care Ltd., Co. Offaly. There is one dog warden working full-time in County Clare and he is employed by the Midland Animal Care Ltd., Co. Offaly. The present warden is Frankie Coote.

The Ennis Dog Shelter is located at the Gort Road Industrial Estate. The dog warden is helped by a part-time kennel assistant. The employment of a kennel assistant has freed the dog warden from certain pound duties and enables him to carry out more licence enforcement duties.

Clare County Council Environment Section is responsible for maintaining a database of dog licences issued in the county. The council sends out dog licence reminder notices on the basis of information stored on this database. It is hoped that these reminders will ensure that the number of licences issued remains constant.

All dog owners should have a licence for their dog and these are obtainable at a cost of €20 from all county council municipal district offices and area offices.

Licences are also obtainable from any post office.

Excessive dog barking

Excessive dog barking that causes a nuisance is an offence. You may be able to solve such problems by talking to the dog owner.

If you don't get a satisfactory response, you may complain to the District Court and seek a hearing. When you have received a court date, you must inform the dog owner of your complaint by using the form prescribed for this purpose under Section 25 of the Control of Dogs Act 1986

The Court may make an order requiring the occupier of the premises in which the dog is kept to abate the nuisance by exercising due control over a dog. The court may limit the number of dogs that can be kept on a premises or may direct that a dog be delivered to a dog warden to be dealt with as unwanted.
