Architectural conservation grant schemes

Financial assistance for protected structures and historic buildings is available. 

Department of Housing, Local Government and Heritage - Historical Structures Fund

This grant scheme is designed to support conservation works on protected structures or buildings in Architectural Conservation Areas. Clare County Council operates the scheme on behalf of the DCHG. Applications now open for 2024 HSF grants.

Department of Housing, Local Government and Heritage - Built Heritage Investment Scheme

This grant scheme supports the built heritage and encourages small-scale, labour-intensive projects to repair and conserve protected structures and buildings in architectural conservation areas. Clare County Council operates the scheme on behalf of the DCHG. Applications now open for 2024 BHIS grants.

Heritage Council – Grants programme

Heritage Council community grants are advertised each October. Projects must be completed within the year awarded.

Heritage Council - Traditional farm buildings - REPS 4

Operated by the Heritage Council on behalf of the Department of Agriculture, Marine & Food. REPS-4 farmers eligible only, for the repair and conservation of traditional farm outbuildings, not main residence. Further information and application forms available on www.heritagecouncil.ie.

Department of Housing Planning and Local Government - Thatching grant

Renovation works to thatched roofs which are at least 10 years old. The house must be in use as a normal place of residence (holiday homes are not eligible).

Irish Georgian Society – Grants

Operated by the Irish Georgian Society for repair and conservation of special aspects of our heritage from all eras (not just Georgian).

Revenue Commissioners - Section 482

Operated by the Revenue Commissioners under Section 482 of the Taxes Consolidation Act, 1997. Tax relief for expenditure on works of repair, maintenance or restoration to historic properties and gardens. Further information and application forms available on www.revenue.ie.

Clare County Council - reduction in development contributions for protected structures and Architectural Conservation Areas (ACAs)

Operated by the Planning Department of Clare County Council. Where a protected structure applies for planning permission it benefits from 100% reduction in development contributions where the ‘restoration or refurbishment’ of the building is carried out to a ‘high conservation standard’. Buildings in ACA's may benefit from a 50% reduction.

Part L exemption and BER (Building Energy Rating) exemption for protected structures

Protected structures are exempt from compliance with Part L (Energy Conservation) of the Building Regulations. They also do not require a BER (Building Energy Rating) certificate when being sold, leased or rented.
