Reminder: boil water notice in effect
Date Issued: 29th February 2008
In view of the fact that two cases of human Cryptosporidiosis in young children in the Ennis area have been notified to Ennis Town Council / Clare County Council by the Health Service Executive ( Mid-West Area ). We are reaffirming the advice that patients who are immuno-compromised, infants, pre-school children and visitors should continue to boil tap water before consumption.
In July 2005 a notice was issued to all households using the Ennis Public Water Supply informing them that pending the installation of a more advanced Water Treatment Plant the drinking water supply is considered a high-risk supply for Cryptosporidium presence. The vulnerable sectors of the community and visitors were advised to take precautions regarding the consumption of the water.
The vulnerable sector includes patients who are immuno-compromised, infants, pre-school children and visitors. This sector was advised to boil tap water before consumption.
A Temporary Membrane Filtration Unit was put in place in June 2006, this has been successful in reducing the risk of Cryptosporidium being present in the drinking water.
Monitoring for cryptosporidium is undertaken frequently by Clare County Council .
- The permanent Water Treatment Plant is currently under construction and it is anticipated that this plant will be commissioned in early 2009.
- The Clare County Council/Health Services Executive Liaison Group will continue to meet and review on-going process control and monitoring results of the drinking water supply.
This notice applies to Ennis Town and environs including the following areas: Clarecastle, Crusheen, Barefield, Doora, Drumcliff, Spancilhill and all Group Water Schemes served by the Ennis town supply.
